Hot Dogs are always better grilled! Serve these veggie dogs with a whole bunch of topping options for a fun summer lunch!
Summer is coming! I can smell it, and by that I mean I can smell my neighbors grill being fired up more often now and I know he's cooking hot dogs! I’m so lucky to live in a place where when summer rolls around almost all of our dining ends up being done outside.
The kids love it and even though the whole family always sits together for dinner, there’s something extra special about sitting together while outside. It reminds me a little like camping!
And what do I grill? It changes so often and can be slowly cooking some tri-tip to something as easy as burgers and hot dogs. Lately I’ve been introducing the family to veggie burgers and they’re so good.
Sometimes I’ll skip the bun and wrap them in romaine leaves. But I never skip the bun when I make hot dogs.
We all love the traditional American bbq feast because they're quick and easy to cook and the toppings are endless. I grilled up these Smart Dogs from Lightlife, made from soy protein and natural plant sources and served them with so many different and fun toppings like these-
- Ketchup
- Mustard
- BBQ sauce
- Diced onion and green onion
- Corn
- Cheese and crushed tortilla chips
- Cilantro
- Pickled peppers
- Relish
- Artichoke quarters
- Avocado
- Jalapeno slices
I’m a traditionalist so it’s always ketchup, mustard and relish for me but you could add so many other awesome things like corn, potato chips, grilled onion and even artichokes! I want to say there are no rules when it comes to toppings and the more choice the better.
One hot tip is to go through your refrigerator and see what you have stashed in jars hiding at the very back. Tell me I’m not the only one who keeps everything?
I bet most of them can be used as some sort of topping for your Smart Dogs! Go all out this summer and create your very own hot dog toppings bar and have everyone customize their own dogs. Just don’t forget some ice cold beer and plenty of napkins!
