Hot Chocolate Buttermilk Scones

  • 3 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 envelope of hot chocolate powder mix 3 oz
  • 2 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter cut into cubes 12 tbsp
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 tbsp milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 tbsp milk


  • preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
  • In a bowl whisk together the flour, sugar, hot chocolate mix, baking powder and baking soda
  • Slice the butter into cubes and crumble through the flour until it feels sandy
  • Add the buttermilk to gently form a dough
  • Transfer the dough to a well-floured work surface and pat to form a ball
  • Use a rolling pin to roll into a circle about 8 inches in diameter and 1 inch thick
  • Transfer the circle to a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper and lightly floured
  • Using a sharp knife cut the dough into 8 wedges like a pizza
  • Brush each wedge with the milk
  • Bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes until well risen and golden brown
  • Let cool while you prepare the icing
  • Whisk together the powdered sugar and three tbsp of the milk. Add more milk if needed to bring the icing to a runny consistency
  • Drizzle each wedge with some icing and serve with a cup of hot chococlate
