"Hipster" is a word I hear being thrown around a lot recently, and it seems like they (the hipster) are copping a bad rap. I'm not fully clued in as to the full definition of being a hipster, but I understand it's someone who has a deep appreciation for stuff including food and drink, which sounds okay to me.
So what does coffee have to do with being a hipster? Iced coffee has been around forever but lately it's been taken to a whole new scientific level, now the cool thing is cold brewed coffee.
Usually iced coffee was made by chilling the leftover drip coffee overnight but now it's been discovered that if you don't hit the beans with boiling water, a whole different taste is experienced. The coffee is less bitter and more sweet.
Now I'm seeing well packaged vintage style bottles of cold brew in stores and it ain't cheap. Some of the popular coffee shops like Stumptown and Blue Bottle Coffee have jumped on this, after all cold brew sounds so much more hip than iced.
But wait up people! You don't have to spend $3-4 on a tiny bottle of cold brew. You can make a boat load of it at home and keep yourself awake for days.
I drink a lot of coffee and it's always hot, even on 100 degree days I have no issues sipping on a piping hot drip brew.
Now I'm so stoked to be able to load up my fridge with my own cold brew. I can still use my french press but instead of pouring boiling water into it now, I just use cold and then store it overnight in the fridge.
Plunge it the next morning and you'll have smooth coffee ready to take on any extreme temperature.
You can add a sweetener if you like. I mixed some cocoa powder and vanilla with condensed milk and added about 2 tablespoons to this 16oz glass. I don't like my coffee too sweet so this was perfect.
Stir in your sweetener, drop in a straw and call yourself a barista...
A refreshing and smooth cold brew coffee drink, perfect for the summer and you don't have to wait in any line to get it. Make this at home in 5 minutes.
