We could all use a little chocolate in the morning, so this Chocolate Smoothie is an awesome way to start the day. It's packed with fruit, non-fat yogurt, and cocoa powder and no sweetener in sight!

I had a chocolate smoothie once and it was super sweet, so it'd probably fall into the milkshake category. I think when most people see the word "chocolate" in a recipe, they automatically assume it's dessert. But this chocolate smoothie is a little different. I didn't add any sweetener to it, so no agave, honey or dates like I might do with other smoothies. And you could never tell, in fact, my wife said it tasted like black forest cake!

Why add cherries to my chocolate smoothie?

Cherries and chocolate already make an awesome combo, just like that black forest cake but they also deliver tons of health benefits to you and your body! They're loaded with antioxidants, natural melatonin and are great for reducing stress on your muscles after working out. Add some flax, chia seeds and healthy almonds for some bulk and you have a great base for a chocolate smoothie that should easily keep you full through mid morning!

Ingredients

  • 10 oz bag frozen cherries
  • 1/2 cup frozen banana
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tbsp almonds
  • 1/4 cup almond butter
  • 1/2 cup non fat Greek vanilla yogurt
  • 1 tsp flax meal
  • 1 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 1/2 cups non fat milk

Instructions

  1. Place all of the ingredients into your blender.
  2. Blend on high until well mixed and smooth.
  3. Pour into two tall glasses and enjoy.
